Are you a lover of greek mythology? Do you like fantasy stories? Then this movie review will be perfect for you!

Have you heard of Percy Jackson before? You may have read the novel version, but this is an adaptation of the novel by Rick Riordan. As a lover of the book, you might not like the movie adaptation, but let's put that aside for a moment and enjoy the movie for what it is.

Introduction

"Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," directed by Chris Columbus and written by Craig Titley, is a 2010 fantasy film based on Rick Riordan's 2005 novel. The movie, the first in the Percy Jackson series, stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson, with a supporting cast that includes Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario.

Summary Of The Plot

Percy Jackson, a teenager who discovers he's the son of Poseidon. Accused of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt, Percy sets off on an adventure with his friends Grover and Annabeth to clear his name. Along the way, they face mythological challenges like Medusa, the Lotus Casino, and the Underworld. The movie brings Greek mythology to life with gods, monsters, and epic quests, culminating in a showdown on Mount Olympus. While different from the book, the movie offers an exciting and visually stunning take on ancient myths.

What Mesmerized Me?

What mesmerized me was the visual-effects they created. More precisely, how they made the world of greek mythology feel alive. There are 4 scenes that make me amazed, namely the half-blood camp, where there is made not just ordinary camping, but camping which is more like a place where many creatures live. Made very beautiful, spoil the eyes, and very cool! Then there is The Underworld, the way they make this underworld place is not like the hell we imagine. But it's more like a residence, a kingdom dominated by fire red and black colors, it seems dominating but there are still modern elements. Then, followed by Medusa's garden, as we are told that whoever sees Medusa's eyes will become a stone and in the garden there are lots of human statues. It gives an impression that is actually beautiful, but also creepy. The last is Mount Olympus where the gods and goddesses live, they made it with modern elements but if you watch and see it, you know very well it still has greek elements. It's luxurious, it's classic, it makes me wonder how they made it come to life like that.

Greek Mythology Elements

We can't forget the fact that this movie is very much about greek mythology and there are some or many elements of greek mythology in it. The way they package the greek mythology is very different and very lively, making us not really feel the difference in the world, but instead making us want to enter the world. Greek mythology that can be seen is in one scene, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover visit a museum where there is a statue of Athena and also in the museum they meet the Hydra creature in Greek mythology. They brought up the mythological elements very well. Another example is The Underworld, where Hades is not made like an ancient god, but he is made like a human rock music lover. His very human behavior but still has elements of mythology is very interesting.

Fun-Facts Greek Mythology

The Percy Jackson movie offers many unique insights into Greek mythology. For example, Medusa, a character from Greek mythology, is the only mortal Gorgon among her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, according to the World History Encyclopedia. She is famous for her snake hair and the ability to turn people to stone with a glance, a trait that is well portrayed in the film.

The Hydra, a snake-like water monster with nine heads from Greek mythology, is a descendant of Typhon and Echidna, bred by Hera to kill Hercules. Hercules faced the Hydra during his twelve labors, a punishment for killing his wife and six sons after Hera drove him mad. In the movie, Percy battles the Hydra, discovering that when he cuts off one head, new heads keep growing.

Third in the movie they made Mount Olympus, right? Based on Britannica, In Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was regarded as the abode of the gods and the site of the throne of Zeus.  The movie creatively places it atop the Empire State Building, merging ancient mythology with modern landmarks. Last but not least, The Lotus Hotel and Casino is inspired by the myth of the Lotus Tree from the Odyssey. In the epic, Odysseus encounters the Lotus-eaters, a tribe addicted to the fruit of the Lotus Tree. Eating the fruit made his men reluctant to leave their paradise-like surroundings.

Positive Take Away

The first time I watched "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," I was mesmerized by how beautifully it brought Greek mythology to life. Despite the differences from the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. To fully appreciate it, set aside comparisons and savor it for what it is—a visually stunning, modern twist on ancient myths. Logan Lerman shines as Percy, and the film cleverly weaves in references to classic mythology, adding depth to the experience.
